Evaluation of cattle farmers’ knowledge, attitudes, and practices regarding antimicrobial use and antimicrobial resistance in Rwanda

  15 April 2024

A cross-sectional study in Rwanda found poor biosecurity measures and low knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) towards antimicrobial use (AMU) and antimicrobial resistance (AMR) among cattle farmers. 83.9% obtained antimicrobials from friends and neighbors, and 61.9% used them for growth promotion. Only 52.6% had correct knowledge, while 56% had good attitudes. Farmers expressed a need for more access to veterinary services and AMR-related training. The study highlights the need for cross-cutting measures to minimize antibiotic usage and reduce the risk of AMR.
